SR Cattle Company Receives 2016 Leopold Conservation Award

Cheyenne, Wyo. – The SR Cattle Company has been named the 2016 recipient of the Wyoming Leopold Conservation Award®, given as part of the Wyoming Stock Growers Environmental Stewardship Award Program.

Owned and managed by the Kane family, SR Cattle Company is located northeast of Sheridan near the Montana border. The family’s dedication to outstanding, voluntary conservation sets an example for landowners across Wyoming and the United States.

The Kanes purchased the ranch in 1988 after buying multiple properties in the area. After his father passed away in 2015, David Kane, his wife, Terri, and son, Nate, began managing the ranch. Over the years, the Kane family has made significant improvements through water conservation developments, weed and pest control, and controlled burning of sagebrush. “The story of the Kane’s ranch epitomizes the greatness of Wyoming ranching families,” states Jim Magagna, Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA) Executive Vice President. “After 132 year of success, they continue to expand and implement exciting new conservation practices while bringing the 5th generation onto the ranch. At the same time they have been steadfast in dedicating their time and resources to the betterment of the livestock industry.”

The WSGA Environmental Stewardship Tour will be held in early July and will showcase the SR Cattle Company, the history of the ranch and the family’s land management practices.

The Leopold Conservation Award in Wyoming is presented by Sand County Foundation in partnership with The Wyoming Stock Growers Association as part of the Wyoming Stock Growers Environmental Stewardship Program. It is sponsored by Peabody Energy, Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association, World Wildlife Fund, Monaghan Management, the Mosaic Company and DuPont Pioneer.
